Item classification rarely gets executive attention, yet almost every downstream system, replenishment, planograms, promotion reporting, category reviews, depends on a clean and consistent department, section, family and sub-family hierarchy.
Manual classification by category teams tends to drift over time as new items are onboarded under time pressure. AI-assisted classification, trained on existing well-classified items, can propose consistent classifications for new items and flag ambiguous cases for human review rather than requiring every item to be classified from scratch.
The realistic goal is not full automation on day one, but a steadily shrinking manual review queue as the model learns from corrections.
